How to Pick the Best Seat on the Plane

If you’re concerned with bulkhead legroom, a missing window or proximity to the bathrooms, there are a couple sites that’ll steer you in the right direction, my favorite being AeroLopa.

But my latest discovery may be my favorite tool yet to guide you where to sit on a plane. Enter: SunFlight. You plug in your departure and arrival cities, your flight date, time & length, and it spits out an interactive map showing you the sun’s path during your flight, as well as what side of the plane the sun will rise on and how far into the flight the sun will rise or set. If you’ve ever been blasted in the face with direct sunlight when you dare to open your shade, this is a total game changer. Just slide the bar to watch the sun’s path and see when you’ll have daylight during your flight.

After checking SunFlight, I now know what side of the plane to sit on for my overnight flight from Doha to Bangkok so I can still see the sites out the window without a direct blast of blinding sun in my face. I also know that approximately three hours into the flight, the sun will start to rise and I can officially order a mimosa at the in-flight bar. Ta-da!
