On our flight home from our mini moon in Tunisia, we had a 6-hour layover in Frankfurt. This was the perfect amount of time to take the 20-minute train from the airport into the city to see a few sites and grab some weiner schnitzel, pretzels and beer. Since this was our first time in Germany, we really leaned into the food stereotypes. And after five days of the Tunisia trio of black olives – harissa – tuna, we were ready for some carbs.
After storing our luggage and hopping on the train to Bahnhof Frankfurt am Main, we found ourselves in the center of the city. I know Frankfurt gets a lot of hate for being the soulless financial capitol of Germany (and it probably does pale in comparison to cultural hot spots like Berlin, Munich and Hamburg), but we found it to be a nice city – walkable and friendly with some beautiful buildings.

Alternative Itinerary: Mainz

I only made this discovery after we’d been to Frankfurt, but it sounds like the preferable way to spend a 6-hour layover is to head 20 minutes west from the airport to Mainz instead 20 minutes east to Frankfurt.
A small city on the Rhine river, Mainz seemingly has it all for a healthy dose of German culture and food in a short amount of time. They’ve got the river, medieval towers, a scenic market square and a museum to honor its most famous historical resident: Gutenberg.
